Adaptation of stormwater management systems
Due to already-manifesting climate change, many design standards are now outdated. Many components built using outdated standards will become inadequate over the useful life of existing and planned stormwater management systems. Our studies show that adaptation can be reliable, and designs cognizant of climate change can adequately maintain historical levels of risk, certainty, and precision.
To adapt communities for more intense storms and population growth, we model historical and projected design storms. We determine the capacity of existing and planned drainage systems. We work with stakeholders to develop an adaptation toolbox providing a range of tactics for accommodating increased runoff. For stormwater systems, we specify dimensions required to convey peak flows from changes in both climate and population, and provide optimized and risk-based schedules for peak flow and asset management.
